Overcome Limitations and Power Your Home
Participants are allowed to supply self-generated electricity, from renewable energy sources, to Ontario’s electrical grid in exchange for credits toward their variable energy costs. One (1) credit is equal to one (1) kilowatt-hour (kWh).
The value of the electricity supplied to the grid is subtracted from the value of electricity consumed from the grid and the result is the “net” difference.
A net metering system should seek to “net” all variable energy costs to zero; however, the involvement of photovoltaics allow owners the relative ease of choosing the extent of their participation and expanding their system in the future.
Credits are generated when more energy is supplied than consumed in a billing cycle. These credits will be applied to your next bill. If more credits exist than are required, they may be carried forward for up to twelve (12) months. Net metering helps people in several ways.
This can lead to significant savings on energy costs over time. Secondly, net metering encourages the use of renewable energy, helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
Thirdly, it provides greater energy independence, allowing homeowners to generate and use their own electricity rather than relying solely on the grid.
Finally, net metering can help promote investment in solar energy systems by making them more financially attractive and accessible to a wider range of people. Overall, net metering is an important policy tool that can help individuals and communities take control of their energy needs and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
Net metering allows solar owners to receive credit for excess electricity generated by their solar panels that is fed back into the grid. When the solar panels generate more electricity than is needed, the excess is sent back to the grid and the meter runs backwards, generating a credit on the owner's electricity bill.
Net metering allows solar owners to reduce their electricity bills, promotes the use of renewable energy, provides greater energy independence, and can help make solar energy systems more financially attractive and accessible.
Qualifications for net metering vary by location and utility provider. In general, homeowners or businesses must have a solar energy system installed and connected to the grid, and meet certain technical and safety requirements.
Some utilities may charge fees for net metering, such as connection or interconnection fees, administrative fees, or standby charges. The fees and regulations surrounding net metering can vary widely depending on location and utility provider.
